This one-day online workshop will introduce you, by way of an overview of what the Counselling training journey involves. This course is an ideal introduction and a good insight into further Counselling training courses offered within Kent Adult Education Centre.

By the end of the day students should be able to:
1) Describe what is meant by the therapeutic relationship in Counselling.
2) Recognise why self awareness is a significant part of understanding Difference and Diversity.
3) Identify the three Core conditions of being a Counsellor.
4)Identify at least 3 Internal and External barriers to listening.
4) Demonstrate use of listening skills in a brief triad situation.
5)Outline the CPCAB Qualification structure and Assessment processes.
6) Participate in a question and answer session.

Who is the tutor?

About the Tutor: Michael Harris

Michael Harris holds the Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling (person-centred) and studied Levels 2 and 3 with Kent Adult Education in Gravesend. Towards the end of Level 3, Michael was approached to become a tutor for KAE.

Originally employed as a sports teacher and then HR Manager (specialising in Recruitment and Selection), Michael’s previous employment includes over 10 years as an assistant to a Consultant Psychologist in London - undertaking psychological assessments of adults and children in the care system. Michael has extensive experience of utilising counselling skills in his work and has a particular interest in developing knowledge of and working with the Gender, Sexuality and Relationship Diversity Community (GSRD).

Michael holds a Level 3 qualification in Adult Education and Training and has been teaching for KAE since September 2019.

Michael has taught Level 2, 3 & 4 qualifications for KAE as well as non-qualification workshops.

How will I be taught?

The Counselling - Introduction course uses learner-centred teaching in a supportive environment, aiming to help students develop their skills and increase their knowledge.

There are opportunities to discuss your progress with the tutor, who can provide feedback and suggestions.

What do I need to have with me?

A laptop/computer with a camera and access to Zoom is essential for online work. Notebook and pens.

What can I do next?

The next step is Counselling Skills Certficate Level 2 depending on your previous experience in the supportive/helping role. We also offer other non-accredited self-development courses. During your course your tutor will offer guidance in relation to your personal progression route. Courses are designed to progress you to further study or into employment. In addition some of our courses support access to Further and Higher Education opportunities. KAE web site has information about these courses and developing your own business. Please speak with your tutor if you have an interest in self-employment or an interest in developing a career. We can also help you access the National Careers service.

What do I need to join the course

There are no enrolment requirements for this course.

Anyone interested in self-development and the world of counselling, who needs these skills in their job or in their personal life. No experience is necessary but students must be willing to participate in role play, as we practice basic listening skills which will be set in the context of current counselling theory.
For your safety we require you to have your camera switched on during on line courses.
