This one day life drawing and painting course is all about creative experimentation, having fun with materials, blowing raspberries at fear of failure – and fabulous poses!
We’ll work with a female model, clothed and unclothed – and we’ll let her guide us with creative poses and challenges. If we’re lucky, a few of her alter-egos might come out to play. Expect props, drapery, outfits and a bit of theatre…
We’ll work with mixed media – from felt pens and chalks to acrylic paint and ink - and shake up the way we make images of the human figure. How can you bring energy, colour and drama to a drawing? How do clothes and props tell a story in a picture? How have artists made pictures of the body that tell us different and exciting things about what it means to be a person?
By the end of this course you should be able to:
- Make expressive drawings and paintings from the human figure
- Use a variety of approaches, materials and techniques to develop a more personal response in your work
- Use colour and mark making to create energy and drama on the page
- Respond creatively to the presence of a life model, and understand why that’s an interesting thing for an artist to do
- Take inspiration from artists who look differently at what it means to make pictures of humans.
You don’t need any previous drawing experience to come along to this class. It’s a great, safe place to try drawing and painting the figure in a supportive and non-judgemental atmosphere. It’s based on the belief that drawing is a process, that everyone can draw, and there’s no such thing as a bad drawing.
There is no qualification for this course (but if you ask nicely, your tutor might make you a certificate, because an artist did that for her once, and it gave her hope).

There is limited parking on site, but there is a public car park nearby and on-street parking.

Who is the tutor?

About the Tutor: Kim Plowright

Kim Plowright is an artist and creative digital producer. She studied fine art at the only UK art school to still teach human anatomy, but then got distracted and accidentally had a twenty-year career doing TV and internet stuff. She’s worked on digital projects at the intersection of technology, art, games and 'old' media; which have won a BAFTA, an Emmy, several Webbys, and a nomination for the Tate’s IK Prize. She also helped set up the National Film and Television School’s PGDip in Creative Producing for Digital Platforms, and taught on it for five years.
Away from the screen, she has always maintained a secret double life as an artist. Her current practice focuses on drawing, memory and the experience of being-in-the-body. Art has become a way of spotting patterns, and connecting with an instinctive, embodied understanding of the world that can be too easily dismissed. Most recently she’s been combining virtual and traditional drawing, and running online drawing sessions for people who think they can’t draw.
She never fell out of love with drawing, and drawing from the body remains at the root of all of her creative work.
