The main emphasis of this course is on drawing and painting in a creative and experimental way, leading to an individual expression and approach to art. Exercises and projects will not always result in finished pieces but will focus on exploring a variety of not only practical techniques but ways of seeing, recording and approaching different subject matter.

By the end of the course, you should be able to:
• Demonstrate a creative and diverse approach to image making
• Use a variety of observational and practical skills to interpret a variety of subject matter
• Use appropriate methods to collect ideas and experiment using relevant materials and techniques
• Successfully review and evaluate your own work
• Research and evaluate the work of a variety of artists to inform your own work and development in project -based tasks.

There is no set ‘homework’, but you are welcome to practise and do further work at home.
There is no qualification for this course.


There is limited parking on site, but there is a public car park nearby and on-street parking.

Who is the tutor?

About the Tutor: Sarah Fagan

Sarah Fagan has been teaching adults for over 20 years. Since obtaining her BA (Hons) Fine Art Painting in 1987 she has exhibited widely throughout the South East and in London including the RA Summer Exhibition. Her work is represented in the South East Arts and Kent County Libraries and Museums Collections.

How will I be taught?

Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will look at the work of contemporary and historical artists and you will keep a sketchbook/notebook and individual learning plan (ILP) to record goals, ideas, processes and progress.Students will need to understand the potential benefit from the programme of study, read and interpret ideas, communicate responses that are clear, logical and understandable and manage your own time. You will undertake critical reflection and evaluation and be motivated to develop creative skills and enhance/develop personal skills.

What do I need to bring with me?

If you are a new student and have no materials please wait for your tutor's advice on what to buy. However, all students should bring an A4 sketchbook and a variety of pencils, charcoal, a putty rubber and a pen. You will need to provide your own materials and these will vary in cost according to the course requirements. If you have any materials/equipment that might be appropriate please bring them with you.
