Photography is the recording of light and this course will cover how to best use a camera to take desirable photographs and expose images successfully. Learners will be taken step by step through the basic operations of their specific camera. Topics will include: recognising under and over-exposure; metering and techniques in improving exposure; use of on camera filters; controlling flash to light objects; and making simple image adjustments using software.

At the end of the course students will be able to:

Control exposure using aperture, shutter speed and ISO
Recognise the difference between natural and artificial light
Create an image using artificial light
Modify light by using filters and lighting equipment

Who is the tutor?

About the Tutor: Timothy Leek

Timothy Leek runs workshops with schools, youth centres and community groups that encourage and explore creativity through photography.
Workshops have included studio photography, digital photography, shooting on location, stop motion animation, video and portraiture. These workshops not only cover technical aspects of photography but also explore the creative side and the performative nature of the medium.
Timothy has regularly worked in collaboration with other visual artists, musicians and performance artists. He is also a part of ANIMATE ARTS COMPANY LTD a community arts company that produces and runs art workshops and projects for schools and the community.

How will I be taught?

Our courses provide an opportunity for students to learn and develop skills and techniques and to acquire an understanding of the subject. Tutors will use a variety of methods including demonstrations, instructions, one to one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques. Our courses are taught by qualified and experienced tutors most of whom are experienced artists.

Your tutor will monitor your progress against the outcomes of the course using an Individual Learning Plan. You will get to add your own goals to this document so that you can see what progress is being made. Your tutor will offer you support and guidance on how you can achieve your goals and improve your skills and technique.

What do I need to bring with me?

Please have with you:-

- A Single Lens Reflex (SLR) digital/manual camera with various lenses and accessories.
- A tripod, film if needed, notebook and pen.

Please don't purchase any books or new equipment until you have consulted with the tutor. You will have to pay the cost of outside processing. You will also need to arrange your own transport to any location shoots.

What can I do next?

During your course, your tutor will offer guidance in your personal progression route.
Courses are designed to progress students to higher levels of the Art. In addition, our courses support application to "Access to Degree Foundation courses" leading to Higher Education opportunities.
