This course will be taught in the Ashford Gateway,

This is the second year of the 2 year Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling CPCAB Level 4 course and will provide professional training in counselling which will enable you to acquire a sound theoretical knowledge and the skills required to work safely and effectively as a counsellor. Successful completion of the course will mean that you will gain a Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling.

Once the main Diploma exam is completed, we will turn our attention to different ways of integrating other theories. Our personalities, personal histories, values, and beliefs impact how we respond in the counselling room, as well as our knowledge of counselling research. In this course, we make this explicit, allowing students to develop their own unique integrative approach which fits their personality and philosophy. In developing this integration, we touch on a variety of other theories including CBT, mindfulness, TA, psychosynthesis, internal family systems, and compassion focused therapy, inner child work to name a few. You will learn how to include some ideas from some of these theories into your own unique approach.
You will strengthen your knowledge of ethical boundaries and the BACP ethical framework.

You will develop a profound understanding and experience of counselling supervision through working as a trainee counsellor in the community within a counselling placement.

A deeper exploration of developing your own self-awareness is an important part of the course. For example:
How do you relate to others?
• What do you need to develop within yourself that will enable you to develop the capacity to therapeutically engage with clients?
• What barriers do you hold that serve to reduce your ability to hold and contain a client's emotional pain?
• Explore and challenge your own issues, fears, and prejudices in order to work with client diversity.

How will I be taught?

Assessments:
You will be assessed using various means including written assignments, a weekly reflective learning journal, presentations and observed practice.

You will be given a Fitness to Practice assessment at the end of year one, and once passed, you will then be responsible for applying to your chosen counselling agency for a placement. You will need to complete 100 hours by the end of year 2 to be fully qualified. After 70 hours you will be able to apply for the CoP.(Certificate of Proficiency), with BACP.

Kent Adult Education requires all agencies to provide you with a service framework which includes clinical supervision that meets the BACP guidelines for counsellors in training, as well as line management. CPCAB requires you to have 1.5 hours a month of individual (or group) supervision or 1-hour supervision per 8 hours of client work. In addition, you will require 30-50 hours of group training supervision as part of the course. You will need to successfully complete year 1 before going on to year 2.

In addition, you need to commit to attending and self funding up to 60 hours of personal therapy during the 2-year course. Your course tutors will discuss a suitable number of therapy hours on an individual basis.

You must attend 85% of the classes in order to achieve the qualification, for example, we would not anticipate students will be absent for more than 5 classes of each year.

What do I need to bring with me?

You will need a notebook and pens along with access to a computer/ laptop that has a word processor and a camera (which may be needed on certain occasions).

What can I do next?

You can gain BACP accreditation, work towards other CPCAB qualifications at Level 5 including gaining a Supervisor qualification. This will be discussed at the end of the course.
During your course your tutor will offer guidance in relation to your personal progression route. Courses are designed to progress you to further study or into employment.
