This course will be held at Oakwood House, Oakwood Road, Maidstone. It will be offered as a blended learning course and you can attend from home as necessary for part of all or the course
(with some students attending in the classroom and some via Zoom from home). More details will follow closer to the start date.

This course aims to develop your skills in drawing and painting and enrich your ability to create expressive work in different media and projects. We begin by looking primarily at drawing, exploring the practical steps in interpreting subject matter through line, tone, texture and form. As you progress you will learn how to use colour and look at the basics of composition and design. You will be encouraged to explore your own chosen painting and drawing mediums (not oil paint), and to develop an individual responses to thematically based work based on a variety of subject matter which may include still life, flowers, natural objects and landscapes .This course allows those students with some experience to further develop their skills. The course will include some life drawing.

By the end of the course you should be able to:
Make drawings and paintings exploring a range of materials and methods (charcoal, ink, pastel as appropriate) to an appropriate level.
Demonstrate use of tone line and form to model your subject and understand the role light plays in describing form.
Demonstrate application of painting techniques and principles of colour mixing relevant to the subject to an appropriate level.
Demonstrated awareness of health and safety relevant to the course.

Who is the tutor?

About the Tutor: Cas Holmes

Cas Holmes is an award-winning artist and writer with over thirty years' experience. She trained in the UK at UCA Maidstone and received research fellowships to study in Japan, India and Canada. She teaches internationally and has written 5 books for Batsford on the subject of mixed media/textiles. The most recent are Embroidering the Everyday (2021) and Textile Landscape (2018)

How will I be taught?

Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will look at the work of contemporary and historical artists and you will keep a sketchbook/notebook as part of your individual learning plan (ILP) to record goals, ideas, processes and progress. You will undertake critical reflection and evaluation and be motivated to develop creative skills and enhance/develop personal skills.

You will receive one to one feedback from your tutor as well as completing an individual learning plan.

What do I need to bring with me?

To the first class bring 2b,4b,6b pencils A3 sketchbook. As you progress you will need a range of paper including watercolour paper, paints, drawing materials and portfolio. You may have built up a range of materials before attending. As you progress you can select what you need.

What can I do next?

The tutor will advise on further progression.

What do I need to join the course

This course is for those who have completed a Beginners course or have some experience. It is not for complete beginners.

It is important to note that art courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity for you to participate fully and get the most out of the course.
