This ten week course will be a new area of development for the Maidstone Masterclass in being both experimental and collaborative.

In the first four sessions we will work as a group to consider the concept of scale. Aesthetically how do we respond to large scale work? What happens to our visual interests when re-visited in scale? Practically, what changes are needed with materials?

The first sessions will be in the form of directed interventions/exercises by the tutor but it will be an opportunity for collaboration and exchange of ideas within the group.
Working in abstraction in the first instance will allow us to explore in paint the more formal elements of picture making. We will select and interrogate line, space, colour, shape, composition, balance, rhythm, pattern, texture (not all)!

Connecting artists will be integral to our understanding of paintings of scale; to use as inspiration and to remind ourselves of our own visual sensibilities.

After the half term, students will work and develop their own projects using study work from the first four weeks. A successful outcome would be the courage to work on a large scale in a subject of one’s choice (abstract/representational).

Starter list of connecting artists. (Expectation of more to come from students):- Rothko, Turner, Diebenkorn, Scully, Tracey Emin, Agnes Martin, Peter Doig, Brice Marden, Christopher Wool, Ellsworth Kelly, Julie Mehretu, Jade Fadojutimi, Daisy Pariss. Contemporary commercial artists Arielle Austin, Matthew van Riel, Fuen Chin, Matthew Dibble.

How will I be taught?

There will be demonstrations, group and individual tuition.

What do I need to bring with me?

Students need to provide their own materials and these will vary in cost according to the course requirements. Please have with you any materials and equipment you already have that might be appropriate to the course. All students should have a sketchbook of at least A4 size, preferably with a hard cover, ring bound and containing good quality cartridge paper and a selection of pencils-B to 4B for the first class.

Notes on materials. There will be cost considerations working on large scale. In the first instance we will work on paper. Sourcing and costing of canvases will be discussed as a group.

What can I do next?

Your tutor will advise you on the appropriate follow-up course.

What do I need to join the course

This course is not suitable for those new to art, instead promoting self directed learning at a higher level. It is suitable for experienced artists who wish to stretch their imagination and make intuitive and stimulating work as well as those progressing from intermediate and advanced art classes. Students should have a good working knowledge of all art materials and how to apply them. This course is not for the beginner.
