This is an online course delivered using Zoom, in real time with live interaction with your tutor and fellow learners.

Traditional and experimental painting techniques will be explored, including the combination of mixed media, e.g. pen and ink, charcoal. By working from both direct observation and from photographic references and sketches, you will encounter a variety of interesting and stimulating subject matter - landscape, still life, natural forms, etc. Reference will also be made to the work of other artists as appropriate.

By the end of the course you should be able to:

- work from a variety of primary and secondary subject matter.
- make a preliminary drawing to establish a composition.
- select and use the appropriate brushes and materials.
- explore colour mixing
- use a range of painting techniques for watercolour and acrylic (washes, glazes, drybrush, wet in wet)
- recognise the styles and techniques of fine artists.
- work to health and safety guidelines.

If your course is held at Ashford Gateway in the evening, please note the following:- The main door to the building closes at 6pm Mon-Wed and 8pm on Thurs. The building can only be accessed via the side door which is situated to the left of the main entrance at the corner of the building. There is an entry system via a buzzer.

Who is the tutor?

About the Tutor: Helen Easter

Helen is an experienced tutor who has been teaching for 27 years. She delivers courses on painting and drawing, printmaking, papier mache, paper pots. Her main work entails images mixed with the abstract and she uses methods and techniques in all mediums. Helen has exhibited and sold her work in galleries in the UK and abroad. Her paintings have been used for book covers and greeting cards. She is involved with the British Fencing Association where her fencing images have been used for prizes; she also does commissions from fencers and was featured in The Sword magazine in January 2013. She has designed murals for Kent Children Libraries and has curated shows for Shepway council and Metropole Galleries which were featured in the Sunday Times as best shows outside London. How will I be taught?

This course will be delivered online. You will join the class from home and be able to exchange and interact with other learners as you would in the classroom (speaking and listening).

Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques.

What do I need to have with me?

If you are a new student and have no materials please wait for your Tutor's advice on what to buy. However, all students should have an A4 sketchbook of good quality cartridge paper, preferably with a hard cover and ring bound, and a variety of pencils. You will need to provide your own materials and these will vary in cost according to the course requirements. If you have any materials/equipment that might be appropriate please have them with you.

What do I need to join the course

There are no ore enrolment requirements for this course.
Everyone is welcome to join this beginners and improvers course. It is important to note that art courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity.

You can access the class from your computer equipped with a camera and a microphone, from a laptop (where the camera and microphone should be built-in), a tablet or a smartphone. Before each lesson, the tutor may send you by email essential lesson information/handouts for you to consult in advance, and before the class starts, the tutor will have sent you by email an invitation to join, which will be a simple weblink to click.
