Do you have a good level of fluency and accuracy in French? Do want to continue to improve and build on your conversational skills as well as be able to gain a deeper cultural understanding? This is the aim of this Advanced French course.
You will benefit from being in a classroom, exchanging face to face with your supportive tutor and other students as you practise speaking in French with a near-native degree of fluency and accuracy and enjoying learning the language.
After completing the course successful students should be able to:
• Take part confidently in a discussion with several native speakers with a near native command of the language exchanging views confidently on a range of topical subjects.
• Use language, vocabulary, idiomatic and colloquial expressions appropriate to the formality of the situation and subject, culture and register.
• Obtain information, ideas and opinions from a variety of sources, extracting required details fully and accurately. Deal with texts of a technical nature with the help of a dictionary or other reference sources.
• Produce written texts for a variety of purposes. Modify language to communicate in ways appropriate to the context and relationship between writer and reader.
Grammar will bridge gaps in knowledge. You will be given small amounts of homework (1 hour suggested) each week to reinforce classroom learning.

How will I be taught?

The focus will be on speaking and listening. Some reading and writing will also be included. Pronunciation and French culture are an integral part of the course. The course will be conducted mainly in the foreign language. Learners will work through different activities individually, in pairs and in small groups, using a variety of learning methods and resources (ex role-play and games). Homework set will provide an opportunity for self-study to reinforce learning.
Initial assessment will be carried out at the beginning of the course to assess individual skill level. You will record your starting point on your Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and set targets. You will revisit regularly during the course to monitor and record your progress. Tutors will feedback orally on homework.

What do I need to bring with me?

The course book will be discussed at the first session if appropriate. Although this is a conversation-based course, you may want to bring a pen and paper and dictionary, although we advise students not to buy anything until after the first session.

What can I do next?

After this, the next appropriate follow-on course is an “Advanced Plus” course. The tutor will be able to advise or check www.kentadulteducation.co.uk.

During your course your tutor will offer guidance in relation to your personal progression route. Courses are designed to progress you to further study or into employment. In addition some of our courses support access to Further and Higher Education opportunities. KAE web site has information about these courses and developing your own business. Please speak with your tutor if you have an interest in self-employment or an interest in developing a career. We can also help you access the National Careers service.

What do I need to join the course

The course will suit the students who can converse easily in all predictable situations, with the knowledge of the main tenses and structure of the language but need to continue to improve in fluency and accuracy to a near-native level in pronunciation/intonation, choice of vocabulary, grammar as well as idiomatic/colloquial expressions with conversation practice.

Students need to have completed a French Intermediate Plus course or have studied the language for approximately 350 hours or have completed up to A level or have spent time an extended period of time in the country , and can speak confidently in predictable everyday situations.
If you are unsure, please carry out our self-assessment test available on www.kentadulteducation.co.uk or in our Centres. The assessment provides a score to help you chose the best course for you. If still unsure, please speak to us or to a Curriculum Leader.
