This course will teach you the fundamental skills required for furniture restoration. Through your own restoration project, you will learn how to read a piece of furniture, understanding its history and the materials used.
This course will provide an introduction to furniture history and wood identification. You will learn to recognise and resolve structural and surface damage, understanding the appropriate tools for the tasks along the way. The course will include surface treatments, covering cleaning and removal of old polishes, colour matching and French polishing. You will primarily work on your own project at your own speed with support from the tutor with the emphasis on starting from scratch.


By the end of the course you should be able to:
-Create a Condition Report to plan your restoration.
-Disassemble and stabilise furniture.
-Repair and reproduce missing or broken elements.
-Restore the surface finish on your piece of furniture.

How will I be taught?

Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstration, instructions, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will be encouraged to look at the work of other crafts people and artists, both contemporary and historical and keep a sketchbook/ notebook to record goals/ ideas, processes and progress and self-assessment against the learning aims on your Individualised Learning Plan, ILP.
Our courses are taught by qualified and experienced tutors most of whom are practising crafts people.

What do I need to bring with me?

Please wear closed-toe shoes and clothes that you don’t mind getting messy, aprons recommended.
A piece of furniture for restoration – this is to be pre-arranged with the tutor to ensure an appropriate restoration plan is created for each individual piece. Please note, this does not include upholstery. The tutor is a marquetry specialist if you are interested in working with inlay and veneer.
Students are welcome to bring their own tool kit. Specific tools and materials required for individual projects will be discussed with the students prior to the course.
