Respond to a range of material written in a variety of styles dealing with topics of a familiar or unfamiliar nature. Understand with greater ease newspaper/magazine articles.

Convey information, ideas and opinions in written form. Use the written language in a variety of work and social contexts.

Start using colloquial expressions and appropriate style of language.

Use the subjunctive mood, passive voice and direct and indirect speech.

You will gain an insight into the culture of the country where the language is spoken.

How will I be taught?

The emphasis is on oral communication (speaking and listening) but some reading and writing will also be included. The course will be conducted in the foreign language. A variety of teaching strategies will be used. Learner participation will be through individual, pair and group work. Cassettes/CDs and videos/DVDs may be used.

Initial assessment is carried out at the beginning of the course to assess individual skill level. Each student's starting point is recorded on an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and targets are set to aid development of the skill. These are revisited from time to time during the course to monitor and record progress.

What do I need to have with me?

A course book may be used, in which case, it will be discussed at the first session. We advise students not to purchase books or expensive materials until after the first class. Students should bring a pen and paper and an A4 ring binder for handouts.

What can I do next?

If there is enough student interest, the tutor can ask for a follow-on “Extra” course for the group to allow continued learning until the next course begins after which a German 7 course is usually appropriate. The tutor will advise.
During your course your tutor will offer guidance in relation to your personal progression route. Courses are designed to progress you to further study or into employment. In addition some of our courses support access to Further and Higher Education opportunities. KAE web site has information about these courses and developing your own business. Please speak with your tutor if you have an interest in self-employment or an interest in developing a career. We can also help you access the National Careers service.

What do I need to join the course

The course follows on from our German Intermediate Plus course and is for anyone who has the knowledge of the tenses and basic structure of the language and needs fluency and conversation practice.
Students need to have attended a German Intermediate course or have studied the language for approximately 300 hours or completed German GCSE (A/C grades) or O level some time ago. You should be able to speak confidently in predictable everyday situations.
If you are unsure carry out our self-assessment test available on www.kentadulteducation.co.uk. The assessment provides a score to help you chose the best course for you. If still unsure, speak to us or to a Curriculum Leader
