Amelia Tunbridge Wells
Ireland was first invaded by the Normans in 1169. This was the start of almost 800 years of British rule in Ireland. This course will bring you on a journey exploring these centuries of difficult history between the two nations. We will examine the seismic impact Tudor rule had on the country, reshaping it both culturally and geographically; how the Flight of the Earls resulted in first plantations in the north, the impact of which is still apparent today. We will look at how the Penal laws affected the Catholic population of this time leading into the decisive nineteenth century when Parliament in London ruled Ireland through its Dublin Castle administration and the political and para-military opposition it triggered. The course will end with the early years of the 20th century looking at the Easter Rising of 1916 and the subsequent War of Independence which resulted in Irish Home Rule and a civil war in the island.
