The 'Introduction to Counselling Skills Award CPCAB Level 2' online course gives the opportunity for personal and professional development for those who work regularly with others, particularly in a supportive or advisory capacity.

This Counselling course will cover the ethical framework in which counselling takes place and enable you to gain an understanding and practise basic counselling skills, such as listening and reflecting.

Successful completion of the course will mean that you will be able to:

- Identify basic counselling theories, practices and ethics and show how they can be used safely.
- Demonstrate improved listening and reflecting skills in your own dealings with others.
- Use initial counselling skills with a greater self-awareness.

How will I be taught?

The course will involve full learner participation and self-reflection. There will be personal and sensitive discussions in small and large groups, group activities and role plays in triads (groups of three) followed by observer feedback. You will be asked to write a weekly reflective learning journal.

Assessment is by completion of an online portfolio and tutor observation of practical skills during the course.

What do I need to have with me?

A notebook and pen and/or a laptop.

For online courses, blended courses or classes which need to be moved online due to bad weather etc, you will need a computer/ laptop with a camera and access to Zoom.

What can I do next?

If you are interested in progressing towards a professional, counselling training programme, you can go on to study for CPCAB’s Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills with Kent Adult Education.

What do I need to join the course

Everyone is welcome to join and there are no enrolment requirements for this course. Please just contact us via the telephone or in person to enrol.

This is a Level 2 course with written work required and you will be expected to complete work at this level. You should be able to follow spoken and written instructions, read handouts/ exercises and take part in group discussions.

This course is for those who have little or no prior experience of counselling or official helping roles.
