This life drawing masterclass investigates various approaches to Life Drawing. Lessons will take the form of a mixture of short drawing exercises (to explore a variety of drawing strategies), some brief discussions about artists' drawings (to consider other approaches to drawing and to provide a broader context for individual practice) and longer drawings to allow for individually focussed teaching/learning. Students need to be aware that models will be unclothed.

The course is held in an art room which used to be ‘the life room' in the days when this wonderful Art Deco-style building was an art college (from the 1930s until the 1960s). It is fully equipped with various sized drawing boards, easels, trestles and ‘donkeys' to allow students to draw at a standing position or sitting. Art materials can be purchased at the class.

Who is the tutor?

About the Tutor: Roy Eastland

Roy Eastland is a qualified teacher and a practising artist with a special interest in drawing.

He has exhibited his drawings widely, including: The BP Portrait Award (The National Portrait Gallery), The Jerwood Drawing Prize, ING Discerning Eye Drawing Bursary, and at various museums, galleries and art fairs.

Previous students have gained the confidence to go onto have their own exhibitions, have gained places at Art Colleges and have simply continued to enjoy learning about drawing for its own sake and have enjoyed drawing in company with others. www.royeastland.wordpress.com

How will I be taught?

Lessons will take the form of a mixture of short and long drawing exercises, brief discussions about particular artists' approaches to drawing and one-to-one teaching. The tutor will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will look at the work of contemporary and historical artists and you will keep a sketchbook/notebook and individual learning plan (ILP) to record your goals, ideas, processes and progress.

One to one guidance, group critiques, self-assessment against individualised learning outcomes stated on the ILP.

What do I need to bring with me?

If you are a new student and have no materials please wait for your tutor's advice on what to buy. However, all students should bring an A4 sketchbook of good quality cartridge paper, preferably with a hard cover and ring bound and a variety of pencils. You will need to provide your own materials and these will vary in cost according to the course requirements. Some of our centres have their own ‘shops' where you are able to buy things at competitive prices. If you have any materials/equipment that might be appropriate please bring them with you. Please do not purchase items before you know the course is running. Typical items you will need are: putty rubber, cartridge paper, and charcoal, which are available at the centre.

Please note there will be additional model fees payable on enrolment.

What can I do next?

We offer a wide range of 5wk and 10wk life drawing classes, oils and acrylics, watercolour, drawing and painting and specialist workshops at the Turner Contemporary.

What do I need to join the course

This course is for experienced students.

Students with some previous experience with drawing or having done a beginners course.
