If you would like to learn how to manipulate oil paint and are new to the media, colour mixing and oil painting techniques then this Oil Painting - Beginners course is for you. This course will give you an insight into how to use oil paint and develop paintings in sketchbooks around tutor led projects.
This course, through a structured and relaxed learning plan, will encourage you to develop your practice including working from observation and imagination, including keeping a sketchbook.
By the end of the course you will be able to:
- Have confidence in making choices about subject matter and composition in observational sketches
- Use oil paint and solvent in varying consistencies
- Identify different methods of building up the layers of a painting including ground colour and underpainting
- Be aware of and work to relevant Health and Safety guidelines
This course will be taught by Suzanne Norfolk. Suzanne is a professional portrait artist living and working in Kent. She has a B.A. Hons. degree in Fine Art and has been painting for over 30 years. She has given private personal tuition to a number of people. She is interested in expressive movement, light and life and works with her clients to create striking pieces expressing their personality and sensuality. Although she concentrates on figurative works, Suzanne’s work extends from pastels to oils and portraits to landscapes. Her work is held in private collections and she has exhibited across the UK. Notable pieces include the Bearsted Plaque, Roseacre School Plaque and a portrait of Frank Woolley - the Kent Cricketer

How will I be taught?
Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques.
What do I need to bring with me?
If you are a new student and have no materials please wait for your tutor's advice at the first session on what to buy. However, you should have:-
- An A3 sketchbook of good quality cartridge paper, preferably with a hard cover and ring bound and a variety of pencils
- An apron or similar to protect your clothes
- A china plate for mixing paints
- Oil paint and brushes will be available for the session when the Tutor will advise what is needed for the rest of the course.
You will need to provide your own materials and these will vary in cost according to the course requirements.

This course is for those students to attended the Beginners course last term. It is also for all students who are beginners to the subject. Please note, this course will be taught at Beginner level.
