This Pilates class will be delivered face-to-face from Broadstairs Adult Education Centre. The course has been developed by and is delivered in Partnership with Nicola Jefcoate. Pilates is a form of body conditioning that focuses on strengthening and stretching the whole body. Pilates can help improve posture, muscular strength, mobility, flexibility, breathing techniques and balance as well as helping to relieve tension and stress. A variety of exercises are performed whilst focusing on technique and control from our centre. Each class will have a varied theme and will build upon skills as you learn week by week.

Themes will include:
• Using abdominal muscles effectively
• Practicing lateral breathing
• Practicing muscular strength and endurance exercises
• A working knowledge of how to improve standing posture
• A working knowledge of how to improve sitting posture
• Improving spinal mobility
• Improving balance
• Identifying how to work at a comfortable level depending on your own ability

You will need to be able to follow verbal instructions, observe and copy physical movements and use spatial awareness within a group. Although there is no specific work set outside of the class, students will gain most benefit if exercises are performed regularly and practiced between classes.

How will I be taught?

You will be taught by a qualified instructor. Teaching methods will include demonstration, explanation, discussion and times for question and answer sessions. Your tutor will demonstrate movements and talk you through all exercises. You will be required to complete a pre course health and fitness questionnaire and during the lessons you will be carefully observed to ensure that you are working safely. You will also be encouraged to monitor and record your progression through the course and your tutor will also give you feedback on your progress. At the end of the course you and your tutor will assess the progress you have made.

What do I need to bring with me?

You will need comfortable clothing that allows ease of movement, preferably a T-shirt and soft trousers or leggings. A fleece may keep you snug when we relax. Denim jeans, formal trousers, skirts or dresses are not suitable for this activity. You will be exercising in socks or bare feet. You may be advised not to take part if you are not dressed appropriately. Students need to bring a hand towel or small head cushion and water and avoid eating a large meal prior to exercising.

Please bring your own 10mm thick Pilates mat as we no longer offer shared equipment for hygiene reasons.
