This course is equally beneficial for learners with experience who want to develop their hand building skills . It covers a broad range of ceramic techniques including the main clay construction methods - pinching, coiling. There is a strong emphasis on personal skill development, including the designing and glazing of work. You will also be taught different decoration techniques to apply colour using slip, glaze and oxides.

Overall, technical courses in creative provision aim to bridge the gap between creativity and technical proficiency, equipping individuals with the practical skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in their chosen creative career path. Students will work on individual projects with professional advice and guidance from the tutor.

By the end of this course you should be able to:
- Demonstrate proficiency in a range of hand building techniques such as pinch pottery, coil building, slab construction, and modeling
- Acquire an in depth understanding of ceramic materials including differen types of clay, their properties and firing temperatures.
- Design and plan ceramic pieces effectively, considering proportion and balance
- Develop skills in surface decoration and glaze application using various techniques such as craving and underglaze painting to create unique ceramic pieces
- Explore and develop your own personal style and artistic expression through ceramic hand building
- Gain knowledge of studio safety working practices ensuring a safe working environment

Please note, clay is paid for by the wet weight. All items are charged prior to and firing. Only clay supplied by Kent Adult Education is allowed in our potteries.

How will I be taught?

Studio craft courses provide an opportunity for students with some experience to further learn and practise the skills of a specific craft at a higher level. Students will also be encouraged to develop a dialogue with the contemporary and historical context of the craft, and will be encouraged to keep a sketchbook/notebook to record ideas, processes and progress. Our courses are taught by qualified and experienced tutors, most of whom are practising craftspeople. They will use variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, instruction, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques. Additional Personal Learning Outcomes can be negotiated with your tutor to better meet your individual needs.

What do I need to bring with me?

Please bring an apron or overall to the lessons as clay tends to be a messy subject. If you have any pottery tools bring them to the first session but do not buy any equipment until you have spoken with the tutor. A Sketch book or notebook, pen and pencil will be useful for taking notes related to your object making.


For Health and Safety please wear closed toe footware.
