Learn and develop a variety of pottery skills including the handbuilding skills of pinching, coiling, press moulding and slab building using stoneware and porcelain clays. You will be introduced to and use a variety of surface decoration techniques including use of texture, slips and glazes. Teaching will be appropriate to experience and ability and there will be an emphasis on developing your own projects. You may be expected to develop your ideas at home by drawing or collecting images.
By the end of this course you should be able to:
Understand and use a variety of hand building skills (coiling, pinching, soft and hard slab building, press moulding) to an appropriate level;
Make a variety of thrown forms that demonstrate development of throwing skills;
Use a variety of surface decorating and glazing techniques to an appropriate level;
Be aware of and work to health and safety guidelines.

How will I be taught?
Your tutor will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will look at the work of contemporary and historical artists and/or craftspeople and you will keep a sketchbook/notebook and individual learning plan to record your goals, ideas, processes and progress. Students will need to understand the potential benefit from the programme of study, read and interpret ideas, communicate responses that are clear, logical and understandable and manage your own time. You will undertake critical evaluation and be motivated to develop creative skills and enhance/develop personal skills.
The tutor will provide feedback on your work through one to one guidance and group critiques. You will be alble to self-assess against your individualised learning outcomes stated on the ILP.
What do I need to bring with me?
Please wear old clothes and shoes. All pots are paid for by fired weight at a reasonable rate. Health and safety issues will be discussed and you will be instructed in the application of safe working practices. Basic equipment will be provided but you may want to build up your own selection of pottery tools as you progress.

There are no enrolment requirements for this course.
Both beginners and those with some experience in pottery are welcome on this course.
