This Pottery course will guide you through the whole process of making objects in clay through demonstrations of hand-building, throwing and glazing techniques. You will learn slabbing, pinching, coiling and basic throwing skills on the potters' wheel. You will be taught different decoration techniques to apply colour using slip, glaze and oxides. You will learn the difference between Earthenware and Stoneware glazes and how to apply them. You will be expected to do some research towards your projects at home. This could be collecting images or drawing out your ideas.
By the end of the course you will be able to:
Use moulds to create shape and roll out slabs using accurate measurements for construction
Understand and demonstrate the different types of clay and firing temperatures you could use
Design and develop a type of embellishment for your pot
Select the appropriate tools to use for the relevant building technique
and be aware of and work to relevant Health and Safety guidelines.

How will I be taught?

Craft courses provide an opportunity for you to learn and develop skills, techniques and understand how to design for a chosen craft. Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including: demonstration, instructions, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will be encouraged to look at the work of other craftspeople and artists, both contemporary and historical.
Your tutor will give you feedback during the sessions and during one to one tuition. You will also be given the opportunity to tell your tutor what you want to achieve in the class and you will be able to measure your own success against your Individualised Learning Plan.
Our courses are taught by qualified and experienced tutors most of whom are practising craftspeople.

What do I need to bring with me?

Please bring an apron or overall to the lessons as clay tends to be a messy subject. If you have any pottery tools bring them to the first session but do not buy any equipment until you have spoken with the tutor. A notebook, pen and pencil will be useful for taking notes related to your object making. Clay, glazes and firing are costed by weight and the size of the item you create and paid for during the course.

What can I do next?

During your course, your tutor will offer guidance in your personal progression route.

Kent Adult Education web site offers many courses for students wishing to develop a self-employed business. Please speak with your tutor if you have an interest in self-employment or an interest in developing career options in this chosen path.

What do I need to join the course

Everyone is welcome to join the course as projects will be individualised with help from the tutor.
It is important to note that craft courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity.
