The course covers sculpture techniques including modelling, carving, construction, casting and assemblage. A variety of materials will be used including clays, wood, plaster and non-traditional materials such as wire, fabric and plastics. Students are encouraged to explore and experiment with their chosen material, developing basic forming techniques and exploring texture and colour.

How will I be taught?

Our art courses provide an opportunity for students to learn and develop, skills and techniques and to acquire an understanding the subject. Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, instructions, one to one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques. , At the start of the course you will work with your tutor to develop an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) to set out what you want to achieve by the end of the course. You will both monitor and assess your progress throughout the course to ensure your learning needs are being met. There are no formal exams or tests to complete on this course.

What do I need to bring with me?

If you are a new student and have no materials please wait for your tutor's advice on what to buy. However, all students should bring an apron and notebook, an A4 sketchbook of good quality cartridge paper, preferably with a hard cover and ring bound and a variety of pencils. You will need to provide your own materials and these will vary in cost according to the course requirements. You will be able to buy most of the materials you need from the centre at competitive prices.

Please note if you are working with clay this must be purchased from the centre, for safety reasons we cannot fire any other clay.

If you have any materials/equipment that might be appropriate please bring them with you.

What do I need to join the course

Everyone is welcome., Students of all levels are welcome including beginners. It is important to note that art courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity. If you need to bring a carer with you, or be accompanied by another person, please ask to speak with the Programme Manager before you enrol.
