These will include: choice of pattern and fabric, basic pattern alterations, basic fitting, advice on cutting your fabric; basic construction methods e.g. seam finishes boning, correct pressing for your fabric.
1.Use a sewing machine competently.
2. Have basic but safe understanding and use of an overlocker.
3. Demonstrate the correct application of knowledge in sampled techniques. Displayed in three seams and two zip insertion techniques.
4. Develop a greater understanding of different fabrics and their uses. Which fabrics are suitable to which interfacing within three examples.
5. Understand and demonstrate the importance of grainline when sewing and cutting out.

About the Tutor: Anna Harper
Anna is a highly experience costume maker and designer.
How will I be taught?
Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstration, instructions, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques. It is important to note that craft courses are practical, requiring a degree of manual dexterity. Students will need to participate fully to get the most out of the course. Our courses are taught by qualified and experienced tutors most of whom are practising craftspeople.
One to one guidance, group critiques, self-assessment against individualised learning outcomes stated on the ILP.
What do I need to bring with me?
We have a number of sewing machines, however students need to be aware that they may have to share or feel welcome to bring their own machines. Students will need to bring
• A bag of wadding (toy stuffing) (the wadding is for a pin cushion.
• 1/2 meter of white or black 1-inch-wide elastic.
• Appliqué paper (bonda-web)
• A pack of lightweight card
• 2 meters medium weight calico (150cm wide)
• A selection of bias binding (satin and cotton fabric in different widths)
• 8' invisible zip
• 2 x 7'' flat plastic zips
• 8' metal zip
• Tailors chalk
• Tracing wheel
• Carbon paper

During your course, your tutor will offer guidance in your personal progression route.
Courses are designed to progress students to higher levels of the Art. In addition, our courses support application to "Access to Degree Foundation courses" leading to Higher Education opportunities.
