Learn high quality construction methods used in the clothing industry, giving your clothes a shop-bought look. You will be able to work on your own project, at your own pace; your project can be anything from tailoring coats to skirts, trousers, children's wear, fleeces or evening wear. I will show you all the processes needed to complete your project. These will include: choice of pattern and fabric, basic pattern alterations, basic fitting, advice on cutting your fabric; basic construction methods e.g. seam finishes, correct pressing for your fabric. Sewing darts, invisible, lapped and fly front zips, waistbands and facings, machine buttonholes and use of interfacings. Construction methods for the more advanced projects will include jacket fitting, setting sleeves, collar and rever construction, lining jackets and coats, pockets, trouser fitting and handling special fabrics.

Who is the tutor?

About the Tutor: Barbara Roots

Barbara Roots is a couture clothesmaker whose specialities are weddings and occasion wear. She has been making clothes for herself and customers for 20 years and teaching for more than 15 years. Her clothes are made to the highest standards. Barbara studied at Kent Institute of Art and Design and London College of Fashion.

How will I be taught?

Unless stated all craft courses do not carry an accreditation.
One to one guidance, group critiques, self-assessment against individualised learning outcomes stated on the ILP.

What do I need to bring with me?

We have a number of sewing machines, however students need to be aware that they may have to share or feel welcome to bring their own machines. Students will need to bring basic sewing equipment (pins, needles, fabric, bobbins, scissors, thread, ruler, pencil) to all sessions.
Advice concerning the choice and amount of fabric required will be given during the first session and it would be advisable for new students not to purchase fabric until discussion with the course tutor has taken place.

What can I do next?

During your course, your tutor will offer guidance in your personal progression route.
Courses are designed to progress students to higher levels of the Art. In addition, our courses support application to "Access to Degree Foundation courses" leading to Higher Education opportunities.

What do I need to join the course

No previous experience necessary.
For beginners and those with some experience. Students will need to: Understand the potential benefit from the programme of study. Read and interpret tasks. Communicate responses that are clear, logical and understandable. Manage their own time. Undertake critical reflection and evaluation. Be motivated to develop creative skills and enhance / develop personal skills.
