This course will be held at Ashford Adult Education Centre at Ashford Gateway.
In this Clothesmaking class, you will use contemporary methods for fashionable and successful dressmaking and tailoring. You will work on your own project, at your own pace. Help and advice will be at hand to guide you. You will be encouraged to focus on independent, project-based learning under the guidance of your experienced and qualified Tutor.
By the end of the course you should be able to:-
• Use a sewing machine.
• Put in a concealed zip.
• Make a apply bindings.
• Understand basic/ advanced construction methods for your project.
• Understand the importance of fitting.
• Learn about fabrics.
Who is the tutor?
About the Tutor: Barbara Roots
Barbara Roots is a couture clothesmaker whose specialities are weddings and occasion wear. She has been making clothes for herself and customers for 20 years and teaching for more than 15 years. Her clothes are made to the highest standards. Barbara studied at Kent Institute of Art and Design and London College of Fashion.
How will I be taught?
Your tutor will carry out ongoing assessment and give feedback. There will be one to one guidance, and self assessment.
What do I need to bring with me?
Please bring the following with you:-
Sewing machine, scissors, tape measure and pins. You will need to purchase patterns, fabrics, interfacing, threads, buttons and zips as the course progresses.

Further Clothesmaking courses will help you to develop your skills and experience. Your tutor will be able to advise you.
What do I need to join the course
This course is for those with some sewing experience. Please note it is not for beginners. If you have sewn in the past and want to a refresh your skills or if you want to improve your current dressmaking skills this course will help you to develop the techniques necessary to produce high quality garments.
