This course will be held at our new classroom at Tenterden Adult Education Centre, Homewood School, Tenterden TN30 6LT.
Sewing for Fun is designed to enable you to gain knowledge and confidence in your sewing skills and in using a sewing machine, in an exciting, fun and informative way. You can choose to make a wide variety of projects, from small gifts and soft furnishings, curtains and blinds, to simple garments for yourself or your children. The tutor will discuss your learning requirements at the start of the course and will advise on the best method of obtaining success with your chosen project. Sewing and making things is following a huge resurgence at the moment. There are savings to be made by making your own soft furnishings, clothes, accessories and gifts.
By the end of the course, you should be able to:-
- Use your sewing machine to best advantage
- Choose and use suitable fabrics for your chosen projects
- Use patterns and follow written or diagrammatic instructions
- Choose the most appropriate designs for soft furnishings
- Take measurements and calculate fabric requirements for your projects
- Use the appropriate techniques to make your items to a high standard
This course will be taught by Deborah Good. Deborah has been a qualified as a teacher of Dress and Design for over 40 years ago and has many years of experience teaching textiles related classes in schools and for Kent Adult Education. Deborah has also worked in the fashion industry as a designers assistant, She has her own business making bespoke curtains, blinds and loose covers, Students are taught to use the same professional techniques that she employs in her business.
Our new classroom is near the School Farm. After coming into the school site via the main entrance, turn immediately left, go straight on past the main school reception and past the main exit, you will then see signage directing you to our classroom.

How will I be taught?
Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstration, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques. Your tutor will give you individual feedback and assess you as you progress through the course.
What do I need to bring with me?
For this course, you will need to bring with you:-
- Your own sewing machine. You will be taught how to use it properly if you don't know how. Don't forget to bring all the accessories, foot controls and leads for the machine.
- Small sewing equipment, such as sharp scissors for cutting fabric, pins, needles, a tape measure, chalk fabric pencil, sewing threads to match fabrics; a retractable metal tape measure; a folder, paper and pens for notes and handouts. A digital camera is also useful.
PLEASE BRING SOME FABRIC ALONG TO THE FIRST SESSION - SUITABLE FOR MAKING A SMALL ITEM SUCH AS A CUSHION COVER OR FOR ANY OTHER PROJECT YOU WISH TO START ON.
The tutor will have a selection of items for sale, such as zipping, curtain linings and headings, piping cord, some threads, wadding and interfacings.

What do I need to join the course
Everyone is welcome to join this course - no experience or knowledge of the subject is needed. The class is suitable for all abilities, from those who are completely new to sewing and want to learn how to use their machine, to those with experience and previous knowledge of making various items. This course is held in our new classroom on the site of Homewood School. Enter the school by the main entrance and turn immediately left. Drive straight on, past the school exit towards the nursery/farm and you will see signs directing you to our classroom.
