This 2 week course is designed for beginners and all levels to make a Kimono. You will work on your own project at your own pace. The tutor will show you all the processes needed to complete your pattern, and to progress through the stages to make Kimono garment. You will develop your understanding and skills under the guidance of your tutor.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Select and use appropriate resources to measure and design your pattern.
- Cut a final pattern design.
- Cut and Sew Fabric.
- Produce a final Kimono garment.
- Use sewing techniques as required by your garment pattern.
- Use tools and equipment safely

There is no set ‘homework’, but to get the most out of the course, you are welcome to do further work at home.
There is no qualification for this course.


There is limited parking on site, but there is a public car park nearby and on-street parking.

Who is the tutor?

About the Tutor: Diana Withers

Diana Withers has an Art School training in Fashion and Textiles. She has worked in the fashion industry for 15 years as a designer and pattern-cutter and continues to work as a consultant. Her teaching experience has been working at the Fashion Retail Academy and various Adult Education venues. Diana has also assessed apprentices at the Royal Opera House, The Globe Theatre & Savile Row. She is passionate and enthusiastic about sharing her knowledge on clothes making and soft furnishing skills.

How will I be taught?

The tutor will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstration, instructions, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques.
There will be individual and group feedback and self-assessment against individualised learning outcomes stated on your ILP (individual learning plan).


What do I need to bring with me?

Your sewing machine; there are some sewing machines at the Centre, but it is best that you get used to using your own.

Please bring along scissors, tape measure, pins, fabric, threads and any other sewing supplies that you may have.

You will need to supply your own materials:

2.50m of main fabric (150cm wide) and for contrast band 1m of fabric (150cm wide) Coloured Print or Plain cotton type fabric can be added.

There are a variety of sewing courses that we offer which can support all students to progress.

What do I need to join the course

For beginners and those with some sewing experience. It is important to note that craft courses are practical, requiring a degree of manual dexterity. If you need to bring a carer with you, or be accompanied by another person, please ask to speak to the Curriculum Leader before you enrol.
