This course is for those with an interest in Clothesmaking and Tailoring and looking at developing their skills and take first steps in starting a career - either in industry or setting up their own business.

In this course, you will focus on how to-

- Construct a zip fly for trousers and sew a tailored waistband.
- Resolve pattern lay planning on fabric economically
- Recognise types of fabric weaves and suitability to garment style.
- Construct a slashed pocket with a flap.
- Produce a garment using tailoring techniques


You will be taught further detailed garment constructions techniques and will work towards producing your own garment. You will look at how to calculate the cost of producing a garment, and all the processes involved.

You will be encouraged to assess your work throughout the course and assess your progress against the course outcomes.

Depending on your circumstances there may be funding support available to help you attend this course.

Who is the tutor?

About the Tutor: Diana Withers

Diana Withers has an Art School training in Fashion and Textiles. She has worked in the fashion industry for 15 years as a designer and pattern-cutter and continues to work as a consultant. Her teaching experience has been working at the Fashion Retail Academy and various Adult Education venues. Diana has also assessed apprentices at the Royal Opera House, The Globe Theatre & Savile Row. She is passionate and enthusiastic about sharing her knowledge on clothes making and soft furnishing skills.

How will I be taught?

At the start of the course, you will work with your tutor to develop an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) to set out your prior learning and what you want to achieve by the end of the course alongside the learning outcomes listed above. It is vital that you engage with this process to achieve the outcomes and successfully complete the course.

You will complete tasks and assignments according to the course syllabus to successfully achieve the outcomes, with guidance from the tutor.

You will receive initial and ongoing feedback from your tutor. It is key that you also monitor and assess your progress throughout the course, to ensure your learning needs are being met and course and personal outcomes are being achieved.

There is no final exam for this course, Level 2 certification is awarded on achievement of the course outcomes listed above.




What do I need to bring with me?

For this course, you will need to bring with you the following:-

- You will need to bring sewing equipment, such as sharp scissors for cutting fabric; pins; needles; tape measure; chalk; pencil; tape measure; A4 folder & plastic sleeves; paper and pens for notes and handouts.

- Please bring 1 metre cotton fabric (i.e.calico) suitable for sampling sewing exercises. Fabric for project you wish to start on - this is not necessary for first session. We will add haberdashery components once project is selected.

- You will need a commercial pattern for project, this can be discussed at the first session if advice needed.

- There are some sewing machines available for student use. However please bring your own machine if you wish to. Don't forget to bring all the accessories, foot controls and leads for the machine.

What do I need to join the course

This course is suitable for those who have completed the L2 Tailoring Practical Skills course.

This course is NOT for beginners.

It is important to note that craft courses are practical, requiring a degree of manual dexterity.
