A chance to try British Sign Language. Learn some basic fingerspelling, some common phrases and how to have a general basic conversation with a Deaf person using British Sign Language.

This short 10- hour course in Canterbury is designed to give students a chance to build on the signs they learnt on a Taster or you can be starting from scratch. You might be learning for general interest or this course is a great starting point before before committing to a longer BSL course.

Students will cover the following:
Introduction to BSL and Deaf Community; Rules of Communication; Meet and Greet in BSL; Fingerspelling
Numbering System in BSL; Questioning; Family
Hobbies; Food and Drink
Work; Transport
Weather; Pets

Who is the tutor?

About the Tutor: Keith French

Keith French qualified as a Social Worker/Care Manager with KCC Sensory Services in 2005 and completed his Post Qualifying (BSc Honours) in Social Work in 2013. He is now a Deaf Community Worker with KCC Sensory Services to improve accessibility, inclusivity and equality for Deaf BSL people in using public services that meets their cultural and communication needs.

He has contributed to a new Social Work with Adults book focusing on people with sensory disabilities and this is an area of expertise for Keith amongst many other contributions to support those with hearing and/or sight difficulties that impact day-to-day life.

Keith enjoys teaching within his role as a BSL Tutor and encouraging others to learn BSL to open up the world of inclusion for the Deaf Community.

How will I be taught?

Fun activities to learn the basics of general conversation. You will work in pairs and small groups and will follow tutors demonstrations and then try together. Your tutor will give you feedback during the session and help you improve with careful correction.

What do I need to bring with me?

Nothing just a willingness to try something new. You need to have easy movement of your fingers and hands and be able to see the signs demonstrated by the tutor.

What can I do next?

Students can progress to the Signature accredited route to gain a nationally recognised qualification - Signature Level 1 Award in British Sign Language.

What do I need to join the course

No previous experience required. Great follow-on from a Taster course.
