An introduction to weaving with a DIY approach. This course covers basic weaving terminology, techniques, and materials, as well as presenting some basic variations. It will also discuss the roles of color, texture, and scale in 3D art. You will learn to weave a textured sampler using household objects as a loom.
Returning students will work on more complex weaving patterns and larger-scale projects. They will continue to refine their weaving technique and yarn choice and prioritise combatting weft shortening and producing neat edges and a basic selvedge. The relationships between colour, texture and weave density will be discussed. You will produce a sampler of new techniques, plus a small decorative hanging of your own design.
By the end of the course students will be able to -
Explain how to prepare materials and set up a loom
Demonstrate how to weave 2 basic textures
Cut your work from the loom and secure it for long-term use or display.
Explain the health and safety considerations for the resources you have used.

How will I be taught?
Craft courses provide an opportunity for students to learn and develop skills, techniques and understand how to design for a chosen craft to a higher level. You will be encouraged to look at the work of other craftspeople and artists, both contemporary and historical and keep a sketchbook/notebook to record goals/ideas, processes and progress. There will be one to one guidance, group critiques and self-assessment against individualised learning outcomes stated on the ILP, Individual Learning Plan.
Our courses are taught by qualified and experienced tutors most of whom are practising craftspeople.
What do I need to bring with me?
