About this course

Charles Dickens lived through most of the 19th century and his novels offer insights into life in England during a period of rapid change and social uncertainty. Dickens’ own fear of poverty, and the traumatic experiences of factory work and his father’s imprisonment coloured the writer’s works, providing a genuine understanding of the desperate plight of the characters he portrays. This course will offer the opportunity to examine some of Dickens’ novels in an attempt to discover more about the world he inhabited – its landscape, society and culture - and his unique view of it.

By the end of this course, you should be able to
• Place Charles Dickens within the wider context of British history
• Describe key events in political, social and cultural history of the era
• Assess the value of literature as historical evidence
