About this course

Have you got a family heirloom or a bargain junk shop find that badly needs a facelift ? Why not learn how to totally transform it into something beautiful and useful again.
On this course at Tonbridge Adult Education you can learn a variety of traditional and modern upholstery techniques, using upholstery tools and materials. Starting with stripping back your chosen piece of furniture, then webbing it, stuffing it and finally giving it lease of new life with a beautiful new top fabric and trimmings.
During the course beginners will learn how to:
-Strip down a piece of furniture back to it’s frame
-Select appropriate tools and use them safely
-Identify correct material for each stage of project
-Select correct tacks for each stage of project

Improvers will work on a project of their choice suitable for their experience and develop the skills needed to complete the project.

How will I be taught?

This course will be taught using a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, instruction, one to one guidance, and group discussions.
During the first few weeks you will complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) at the first session, this will establish your starting point and will aid your development throughout the course whilst learning new or improving on current skills. In addition to this you will receive on-going one to one support and feedback.
You will be encouraged to keep a notebook to record goals/ideas, processes and progress. You are welcome to bring a camera/use a camera phone to record the work that you do each week.
Please let us know if you require any additional support to enable you to take part in the course.

What do I need to bring with me?

You should bring in a small item of furniture such as a drop in seat or pin cushion seat as a first project.
As well as your chosen piece of furniture, you will need to bring in a small hammer, a pair of pliers, scissors, notebook and camera or camera phone in order to record your work. Most Specialist materials are usually available to be purchased at class. A small charge of approximately £10.00 per term is made for tacks and string
Apart from pens and notebooks please do not buy books or equipment before the start of the course. Details will be discussed at the first session. .
Please ask before buying large pieces of furniture as there is limited storage space available in the centre and we cannot accommodate sofas or settees. Please note you can only store 1 small piece of furniture at the centre and it is left at your own risk.

What can I do next?

Other upholstery course to develop skills further, or perhaps a furniture restoration course to extend skills.

What do I need to join the course

This course is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some experience, all are welcome and everyone will be encouraged to achieve their full potential working on a project suitable for their previous experience.
It is important to note that craft courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity. If you need to bring a carer with you, or be accompanied by another person, please speak to a member of staff before enrolling
